Emerging catalytic processes for the production of adipic acid

چکیده
Research efforts to find more sustainable pathways for the synthesis of adipic acid have led to the introduction of new catalytic processes for producing this commodity chemical from alternative resources. With a focus on the performance of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide as preferred oxidants, this minireview summarizes recent advances made in the selective oxidation of cyclohexene, cyclohexane, cyclohexanone and n-hexane to adipic acid. Special attention is paid to the exploration of catalytic pathways involving lignocellulosic biomass-derived chemicals such as 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, D-glucose, g-valerolactone and compounds representative of lignin and lignin-derived bio-oils.

Nylon production: an unknown source of atmospheric nitrous oxide.
Nitrous oxide in the earth's atmosphere contributes to catalytic stratospheric ozone destruction and is also a greenhouse gas component. A precise budgetary accounting of N(2)O sources has remained elusive, and there is an apparent lack of source identification. One source of N(2)O is as a by-product in the manufacture of nylon, specifically in the preparation of adipic acid. Characterization o...
متن کاملAdipic acid tolerance screening for potential adipic acid production hosts
BACKGROUND Biobased processes for the production of adipic acid are of great interest to replace the current environmentally detrimental petrochemical production route. No efficient natural producer of adipic acid has yet been identified, but several approaches for pathway engineering have been established. Research has demonstrated that the microbial production of adipic acid is possible, but ...
متن کاملGreen Catalytic Oxidation of Cyclohexanone to Adipic Acid
Synthesis of adipic acid by catalytic oxidation of cyclohexanone with 30% hydrogen peroxide in the presence of sodium tungstate catalyst can be well performed under reflux temperature. The adipic acid isolated yield reaches to 82.1%, and the purity of the product is also very high. The catalytic oxidation reaction takes place without any organic solvent and phase-transfer agent. The effects ove...

متن کاملEmissions from Adipic Acid and Nitric Acid Production
Nitrous oxide (N2O) is generated as a by-product during the production of adipic acid and nitric acid. The main use for adipic acid is as a component of nylon-6/6; thus production trends are closely correlated with nylon consumption trends. Worldwide, there are very few adipic acid plants. The U.S. is a major producer with three companies in four locations accounting for approximately forty per...
